School date is on council calendar

18th October 2007 02:05:30 AM

LOCAL school councils will be acknowledged for their hard work and voluntarism with an annual City of Casey civic event.

Councillors resolved at last Tuesday night’s Casey Council meeting to make the event happen each year.

The move follows the hosting of the first event in June at the Balla Balla Centre in Cranbourne.

Council officers said letters were sent to 80 primary schools and secondary colleges inviting school council members to attend the evening, where their contributions and efforts would be recognised and acknowledged.

Councillor Janet Halsall instigated the first event, and said it was well received by those who attended.

“The representatives were thrilled with the event,” she said.

The council received responses from 11 primary schools and five secondary colleges with 39 school council members attending the function.

Deputy mayor Kevin Bradford was full of support for the idea for an annual event and said Casey Council should do all it could to acknowledge the efforts of volunteer groups vital to the education of children.

Only councillors Paul Richardson and Steve Beardon voted against the motion to hold the event regularly.

Cr Beardon said it was a State Government responsibility.

The event will now be included in the mayor’s official function dates.
