A TOTAL of 342 volunteers collected 46 cubic metres of waste from Hobsons Bay sites during the recent Clean Up Australia Day.

The chairwoman of the Hobsons Bay Sustainable Environment, Angela Altair, described it as “an outstanding effort”.

It was the best in terms of the number of volunteers and amount of litter cleared, Cr Altair said.

The sites cleaned up were Cherry Lake, Cresser Reserve and Altona Beach, Altona, Kororoit Creek, Altona North, Tatman Reserve, Altona Meadows, McCormack Park, Laverton, and Wader Beach, Point Gellibrand, Williamstown Beach, Railway Cres, and Burgoyne Reserve in Williamstown.

The council sites, The Warmies boat ramp and the Spit, Newport, were also cleaned up.

Hobsons Bay mayor Bill Baarini said when in thanking the community volunteers, that litter was the most visible form of pollution and a huge environmental threat.

“An estimated seven billion cigarette butts and 80 million plastic bags end up in Australian waterways, streets and parklands each year creating a serious threat to our precious wildlife and marine life,” he said.

“Everyone can do their bit by using the bins provided, not littering and reporting people seen littering to the EPA hotline on 1800 444 004.”
