NARRE Warren South P-12 College students rubbed shoulders with several elite athletes during an annual football fundraising day last week.

The Tyler Fishlock Homestead Footy Day was organised by the school’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) group.

Melbourne Football Club stars Aaron Davey and Nathan Jones attended the event along with Melbourne Storm players Sammy Joe and Louis Fanene.

More than $700 was raised on the day through donations from students and sponsors.

The money will help Tyler fight his well-publicised battle with cancer.

The college also raised more than $1700 as part of last week’s Brodie-Lee Douglas Memorial Catwalk.

Hampton Park toddler Brodie-Lee, 3, died in May last year after a long battle with illness.

VCAL teacher Kelly Lackmann, who has overseen the student project for the last three years, said it was an exciting time for the students.

“They get to have an impact on those less fortunate and at the same time develop some very important skills which will serve them well into the future,” she said.

The award-winning VCAL Program has now raised about $14,000 for various causes over the last three years.

VCAL manager Rob Duncan said:

“It is a tribute to the students we have had through the program over the past three years,” he said.

“They are desperately keen to maintain the standards and make every year better than the previous one.

“The opportunity that VCAL provides these kids is immense and I am very pleased that they are willing to make the most of that opportunity to assist others.”

Students will muster up some more energy for the final VCAL event of 2008, the annual VCAL Basketball Day, which will occur on 26 June in Cranbourne.
