Light bulb scam targets elderly

CASEY residents are warned to be aware of a telephone scam targeting the elderly.
South Eastern Metropolitan MP Inga Peulich said the scam involved a person who claims to be “on behalf of the State Government” and they offer to send a service person to change all old light globes for new globes. The caller further claims that if the globes in the house are not changed then the resident would be breaking the law.
Ms Peulich said that residents should be aware of anyone claiming to be from the State Government and should take down as many details as possible.
“This latest scam appears to be targeting elderly residents in Melbourne’s south-east,” Ms Peulich said.
“If a resident suspects a telephone scam they should contact Consumer Affairs on 1300 55 81 81 and notify the local police station.”
The scam has been reported to Consumer Affairs Victoria.
