THERE was plenty of monkey business, including a macho performance, at the Kooweerup Community Centre on Friday.

Killara Hostel staff donned police and construction uniforms as they danced to songs by ’70s disco band the Village People, including YMCA, Macho Man and In the Navy.

Local band Monkeybiz also took patrons back in time, performing an array of classic songs during Kooweerup’s eighth annual community tea dance.

Killara volunteer Jenny Stephens also joined in the fun, executing the hokey pokey on stage.

The event was a hit with the 100-strong crowd, which included seniors from Killara, Hillview and Millhaven hostels and the Westernport Nursing Home.

The afternoon tea was prepared by the Kooweerup Regional Health Service ladies auxiliary.

Cathy Bain, Killara co-manager and diversional therapist, said the eighth annual event was an important part of Seniors Week celebrations in the area.

“It was really just to bring the community together,” she said.

“It was to bring to the fore the importance of the older person and what they contribute to the community.”
