MACKILLOP College was honoured for its contribution to education in this year’s teaching awards.

The college was recognised for its creative approaches to teaching, outstanding efforts in student outcomes and innovative achievements.

The Australian Awards for Teaching Excellence were presented by Education Minister Julia Gillard at a ceremony in Parliament House, Canberra.

College principal Rory Kennedy accepted the award for “Excellence by a School and its community”.

Mr Kennedy said “Every staff member has made an active and positive contribution to this award”.

The nomination involved the college’s approach to learning and the programs put in place to help students excel.

The college features an alternative campus for Year 9 students, the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning, a new arrivals program, a contemporary wellbeing program and a school achievement focus.

Chair of Teaching Australia Dr Gregor Ramsey said the awards gave a clear indication of the high quality of teaching that Australians enjoy.

“It shows how well Australia is served by its teachers, principals and school staff.”
