A SUNSHINE resident will wage his own war on graffiti, in a one-man bid to clean up Brimbank’s streets.
Brian Carroll says he is sick and tired of vandals tarnishing the city’s image and has made it a personal mission to fight back against what he has labelled an eyesore.
Mr Carroll runs a cleaning company and believes that drastic action needs to be taken to reclaim Brimbank’s streets.
He is working on a business plan aimed to catch graffiti artists in the act and intends to unveil his proposal to Brimbank Council.
Mr Carroll believes that video surveillance is the only way the municipality’s graffiti problem will be solved.
He proposes that mobile CCTV cameras be alternated around well-known graffiti hotspots to help identify the vandals.
“It’s absolutely disgusting how much graffiti there is around,” Mr Carroll said.
“Instead of constantly going around and cleaning it up, the council and business owners need to get serious about catching these people.”
Mr Carroll said the council should hire a surveillance company to monitor the cameras on a regular basis.
“If no-one else is willing to get pro-active, I’m going to look into it myself because I’m getting fed up.”
Leigh Harrison, the council’s Acting General Manager of City Development, said that after recent success with CCTV cameras, council would consider rolling out more in the municipality.
But Mr Harrison said it was easier to catch rubbish dumpers than graffiti artists.
He also said installing and maintaining the technology would be expensive.
