WHILE the Altona by-election war of words heated up between the two main parties last week, nominees continued to campaign heavily on the issue of public transport in the West.

ALP candidate Jill Hennessy said she believed the state of public transport was good, but could always be improved.

However, Liberal Party candidate Mark Rose said the state of public transport in Victoria was an “absolute joke.”

He said while he was at Laverton train station last week, commuters had shared their concerns with him.

“The Liberals will put protective services on stations every night. There needs to be more investment in basic infrastructure in the area,” he said.

Greens candidate David Strangward said improving public transport was one of his main platforms in the lead-up to election day.

“The Greens would duplicate the rail line through Altona and run services at least every 10 minutes throughout the day and evening,” Mr Strangward said.

Socialist Alliance contender Margarita Windisch spent last Wednesday at Laverton station campaigning for new tram lines at Point Cook and fully-staffed stations.

Independent candidates Liz Mumby and Brijender Nain are also heavily campaigning on public transport.
